October 11, 2009
CaribWorldNews, MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica, Fri. Oct. 9, 2009: A 21-year-old schizophrenic Jamaican man will have to spend the next 83 years in prison.
Stephen Fray, who tried to hijack a Canadian jet at the Sangster Airport on April 19th was handed the sentence on Thursday. He will, however, serve 20 years due to concurrent sentencing.
The Montego Bay resident was sentenced to three 20-year terms for a variety of charges including shooting with intent and robbery, and an 18-year term for illegal possession of a firearm. He also was sentenced to a two-year term and three one-year terms for assault, and was acquitted on two other counts of assault.
Fray, armed with a gun, took the CanJet Boeing 737 with over 180 passengers hostage in April. He sneaked past security and held up the passengers and crew demanding money and valuables. It is also reported that he demanded to be flown to neighboring Cuba.
The drama ended when police and army officers stormed the airliner and captured Fray. No one was hurt in the incident and Fray`s lawyer says he will be appealing the sentence.
`I think she was propelled by the act as opposed to the fact that the man was deluded into doing the act, she has not considered that,` said Fray`s lawyer after the pronouncement.
